An early 19th century French Provincial pine secretary, sourced in Provence, France. Constructed in solid pine and retaining a warm, naturally aged surface, the piece has a beautifully rustic character and rich patina developed through age and use. The slant front drops to form a generous writing surface and opens to reveal a fitted interior with six small drawers arranged around a central open compartment. A series of divided pigeonholes provides additional storage, adding both visual and functional interest to the interior. The writing surface retains scratches, stains, ink marks and other traces of historic use. Below, three full-width drawers provide generous storage and are fitted with brass ring pulls and decorative escutcheons. The slant front is accompanied by a decorative period key. Paneled sides, subtly shaped front feet and a restrained scalloped apron complete the provincial design. The warm honey-toned pine displays natural variations in color throughout, with darker areas, rubbing, abrasions, old marks and wear contributing to the character of the surface. Structurally revised with repairs as needed while preserving the natural patina and historic character. A characterful example of early 19th century French Provincial furniture, combining a fitted writing interior, generous storage, warm aged pine and the relaxed rustic character associated with furniture from the South of France.
