An exceptional early 18th-century French Régence period walnut chest of drawers, sourced in Lyon, France. Dating to the early 1700s, this three-drawer commode features elegant proportions, a richly aged walnut surface, and a beautifully developed honey-brown patina. The gently serpentine drawer fronts are embellished with hand-carved foliate motifs at either end, complemented by ornate brass drawer pulls and decorative escutcheons, which appear to be later replacements. Each drawer features a central shaped cartouche surrounding the keyhole, while the subtly scalloped top, softly rounded corners, paneled sides, and substantial straight legs reflect the restrained elegance of French Régence furniture. The chest features traditional hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery and pegged construction, reflecting the craftsmanship of the period. The walnut displays natural variations in tone, historic repairs, and surface markings that contribute to its character. The piece has been structurally revised, carefully cleaned, and polished with wax to preserve its aged finish.
