Set of Six 1930s French Art Deco Scalloped Backs Dining Chairs in Maple & Velvet
A refined set of six French Art Deco dining chairs, sourced in Provence and dating to the 1930s. The chairs present a clean, architectural silhouette defined by restrained lines and a gently scalloped back that introduces a soft decorative note within an otherwise controlled form. The frames have been structurally revised and refinished in our workshop, ensuring they are solid, stable, and ready for daily use while preserving the integrity of the original construction. Crafted in solid maple, the wood has developed a rich, warm tone that enhances the natural grain and gives the frames a depth and presence that reads closer to darker hardwoods. The design is grounded in clarity - featuring subtly tapered front legs that introduce a sense of lightness, a strong seat rail, and a composed back profile that reflects the more refined, understated side of French Art Deco. They have been newly upholstered in an off-white velvet and finished with dark green velvet piping that traces the contours of the back and seat. This tailored detail adds definition and contrast, sharpening the silhouette while maintaining the overall restraint of the design. Balanced in proportion and comfortable in scale, the chairs function beautifully as a dining set while remaining versatile enough for use as side chairs in more curated interiors.
