Charming set of 14 petite mid-19th century French Provincial dining chairs, sourced in Provence, France. Crafted in solid maple, each chair features a slender ladder-back frame with two shaped scalloped splats, gently curved legs and original handwoven rush seating. The chairs retain traditional pegged construction, visible at the joinery of the shaped back splats, together with simple rounded stretchers connecting the legs. The straightforward construction, subtle irregularities and beautifully worn maple surfaces reflect their provincial origins and generations of use. Their petite proportions and unusually large set of 14 make them particularly well suited for a long farmhouse or refectory table. The maple has developed a rich honey-brown patina with natural tonal variation, marks and surface character throughout, complemented by the warm golden color of the original rush. Structurally revised and restored, solid and stable. The maple has been cleaned and polished with wax, preserving its aged patina and surface character. Original rush seats remain intact with age-related wear and variation consistent with age and use.
