Set of 10 Late 19th Century French Provincial Walnut Dining Chairs in Green Ticking Stripe
A set of ten late 19th-century French Provincial walnut dining chairs, sourced in Provence, France. The chairs feature tall, slender backs and a warm aged finish that highlights the natural grain and character of the walnut. The chairs have been structurally revised to ensure they are solid and stable, while preserving their aged character. The seats have been completely rebuilt and newly upholstered in a soft willow green and ivory ticking stripe, finished with single piping. Each chair is constructed with gently curved rear stiles framing an open back, topped by a decorative turned spindle rail. A broad shaped back rail with semicircular cutouts sits above three vertical elements, including a shaped central splat flanked by finely turned spindles. Turned front legs and decorative stretchers complete the design, giving the chairs a distinctive yet restrained French country character. Traditional construction is visible throughout the set, including pegged and doweled joinery and turned components fitted directly into the surrounding rails and stiles. Subtle variations in the turning, wood grain, joinery, and proportions reflect the hand-crafted nature and age of the chairs. The walnut retains an attractive patina with old marks, wear, and tonal variations developed through generations of use. With ten chairs retaining a cohesive design and beautifully aged surfaces, the set offers an increasingly difficult-to-find scale for a large dining or farmhouse table.
