Dating to the late 19th century, this French Gothic Revival writing desk is crafted from solid oak and distinguished by richly carved architectural detailing throughout. Sourced in Provence, France, the desk features a rectangular molded top above a wide central drawer, with Gothic-inspired tracery extending across the drawer front and surrounding apron. The generously proportioned drawer is constructed with traditional dovetail joinery and fitted with an ornate metal drop pull. Repeating carved quatrefoil and foliate motifs decorate the drawer front and corner blocks, while carved brackets transition into the slender legs below. The legs feature deeply carved vertical ornament and are joined by a low H-form stretcher, itself finished with a continuous carved border, and terminate in turned feet. The carving continues along the sides, allowing the desk to present beautifully from multiple angles. The oak retains a warm, richly aged surface with visible grain, tonal variation, and character developed through age and use. The desk has been structurally revised to ensure it is solid and stable, then cleaned and polished with wax, preserving its aged patina and character.
