Early 19th Century French Directoire Walnut Extending Dining Table
An early 19th century French Directoire extending dining table crafted in walnut and sourced in Provence, France. Exceptionally versatile in scale, the table features two hinged drop leaves together with two removable central extension leaves, allowing it to transition from a compact rectangular table to a nearly round dining table and ultimately to an elongated oval table measuring nearly seven feet in length. The table has been structurally revised to ensure it is solid and stable, then cleaned and polished with wax while preserving the warm aged patina and character of the walnut. The top is composed of broad walnut boards displaying expressive natural grain, knots, tonal variation, and traces of age and use. With the drop leaves raised, the rounded ends create a balanced, nearly circular form; when fully extended, the table takes on an elegant elongated oval silhouette. The table is supported by four slender tapered outer legs detailed with turned collars, decorative brass bands, and patterned brass sabots. A fifth central leg provides additional support when the table is extended. The restrained ornamentation, tapered proportions, and brass detailing are characteristic of the Directoire period. A particularly adaptable antique dining table, offering multiple configurations while retaining an elegant and refined profile in each form.
