Pair of 18th Century French Louis XVI Giltwood Demilune Console Tables
Sourced in Provence, France, this exceptional pair of late 18th-century French Louis XVI giltwood demilune console tables embodies the refined neoclassical design and craftsmanship of the period. Each console features a finely carved and pierced giltwood frieze decorated with classical Louis XVI ornament, including beaded borders, guilloche motifs, rosettes, and carved ribbon garlands. Slender fluted supports are joined by a curved stretcher centered with a carved finial, creating an elegant and architectural silhouette. The consoles retain their original shaped fossil marble tops with molded edges. The dark stone is distinguished by striking naturally occurring fossil inclusions, veining, and tonal variations, creating a dramatic contrast with the warm gilded frames. Acquired with extensive wear and losses to the gilded surfaces, the pair underwent a comprehensive professional restoration. The frames were carefully examined and structurally restored where necessary before the gilded finish was renewed using traditional techniques. Particular attention was given to preserving the original carved and pierced ornamentation, proportions, and historic character of the frames rather than creating the appearance of newly manufactured pieces. The restoration allows the intricate Louis XVI carving to once again read clearly while maintaining the depth and character appropriate to their age.
