1940s Monumental Sideboard by A. Bicchierini, Burl Wood & Marble, Provence
A monumental 1940s French Art Deco sideboard by A. Bicchierini of Marseille, crafted from richly figured burl wood veneer and retaining its original black Portoro marble top. Measuring nearly 99 inches wide, the sideboard has an impressive architectural presence and exceptional scale. Sourced in Provence, France. Professionally and structurally revised to ensure the sideboard is solid and stable, with the wood professionally refinished. The expansive façade is distinguished by exceptional burl veneer, carefully arranged in dramatic symmetrical patterns across four doors. Projecting vertical bands emphasize the central section, while softly rounded outer corners balance the substantial proportions and give the cabinet its distinctive Art Deco silhouette. The original black Portoro marble top is richly veined in gold, copper, cream, and warm amber tones. Set within a substantial stepped and molded wood surround, the marble creates a striking contrast against the depth and movement of the burl veneer. The cabinet rests on an impressive architectural pedestal base with a long fluted central support and sculptural stepped plinth, reinforcing the strong geometric character of the design. Four doors open to a fitted interior with adjustable wood shelving and two upper drawers, providing generous concealed storage. Decorative period keys accompany the doors. The original brass maker's plaque remains affixed to the interior and reads "Meubles d'Art A. Bicchierini, 19 rue Friedland, Marseille," documenting the cabinet's maker and place of manufacture. A superb example of 1940s French Art Deco cabinetmaking, combining exceptional burl veneer, original Portoro marble, monumental proportions, refined architectural detailing, generous storage, decorative period keys, and the documented craftsmanship of A. Bicchierini of Marseille.
