A late 19th-century French Provincial oak writing table or desk, sourced in Provence, France. Crafted from solid oak, the table features an unusually substantial 1.5-inch-thick plank top above two functional dovetailed drawers fitted with simple round wooden pulls. The table is raised on four baluster-turned legs that gently splay outward, joined by an elaborate H-form stretcher with turned detailing and square block intersections. Traditional construction details are visible throughout, including dowel and pegged joinery and dovetailed drawer construction. The exceptionally thick top gives the table a substantial, almost butcher-block quality, while the warm oak finish, pronounced grain, knots, old fasteners, and naturally aged surface contribute to its rustic French Provincial character. In addition to use as a writing desk or work table, its proportions and substantial top would also lend themselves well to use as a small kitchen or breakfast table. Structurally revised to ensure it is solid and stable, then cleaned and polished with wax while preserving the naturally aged patina and character of the existing finish.
