Late 19th Century French Louis XIV Style Walnut Writing Table with Three Drawers
A late 19th-century French Louis XIV style walnut writing table or desk, sourced in Provence, France. The table features a rectangular paneled walnut top framed by contrasting banding, with exposed pegged joinery adding to its architectural character. The front is fitted with three functional drawers constructed with traditional dovetail joinery. Each drawer has a shaped molded panel and decorative brass pull. The opposite side was designed to mirror the front, repeating the three-drawer façade and hardware to give the table a finished, symmetrical appearance when viewed from either side; the drawers on the reverse are decorative and do not open. The table is raised on four elaborately turned legs articulated with black-painted details. The legs are joined by an unusually sculptural shaped stretcher, also accented with black paint, with sweeping curved sections at either end connected by a long central rail. Pegged and joined construction is visible throughout the base, emphasizing the table’s traditional craftsmanship. The walnut displays a warm aged patina with variations in tone throughout. The paneled top retains visible old repairs, filled areas, marks and wear from use, while the drawer fronts and frame show additional surface wear consistent with the table’s age. The contrast between the warm walnut and black-painted details further defines the turned legs and stretcher. Structurally revised to ensure the table is solid and stable, while preserving its aged character, historic repairs and patina.
