Antique French Oak Monastery Trestle Dining Table
An early 20th-century French oak monastery trestle dining table, sourced in Lyon, France. Distinguished by its substantial proportions and sculptural architectural base, the table draws on the traditional craftsmanship of French monastic furniture, combining a restrained rectangular plank top with boldly shaped trestle supports. The substantial tabletop is constructed from wide oak planks, measuring 2 inches thick, with pronounced grain, natural variations in tone, and a rich brown finish. Its generous surface rests on a pair of sculptural trestle supports, each featuring a distinctive shaped silhouette that extends into broad, sweeping feet. A substantial longitudinal stretcher connects the two supports, secured by exposed through-tenon and wedged joinery. This traditional construction provides structural stability while contributing to the table's architectural character. The contrast between the simplicity of the plank top and the expressive form of the base gives the piece a distinctive presence. Measuring over 7 feet in length, the table offers generous seating while retaining the understated, utilitarian character associated with traditional French monastery furniture. The table has been structurally revised and refinished, preserving the natural grain and character of the oak while bringing renewed depth and warmth to its finish. Recessed ball casters were added to the underside of the feet at a later date for ease of movement.
