Mid 19th Century French Provincial Oak Hall Bench
A substantial mid 19th century French Provincial oak hall bench, sourced in Provence, France. Crafted from solid oak, the bench features a thick plank seat supported by trestle-form legs joined by an H-form stretcher with a central support, giving it a grounded, architectural presence. The turned uprights and finials draw from the Louis XIII tradition, while the overall execution remains distinctly provincial — practical, robust, and made for daily use. The backrest is mounted on its original hinges, allowing it to pivot so the bench can be used from either side - a traditional and functional design often found in French country homes. Structurally revised for stability and prepared in our workshop, the piece has been carefully cleaned and waxed, highlighting a rich, naturally aged patina with visible grain, knots, and surface variation throughout. Pegged joinery and hand-worked elements are evident across the frame. Structurally sound and sturdy, with wear consistent with age and use.
